Empowering Women Over 30: Five Insights on Imposter Syndrome and Leveraging Unique Strengths in the Workplace

Imposter syndrome is a term that resonates with many women, especially those over 30. As you navigate your career and personal life, feelings of inadequacy can often emerge, particularly when - as is very common - women compare to male counterparts. However, recognising the unique strengths you possess is essential for growth and success. In this post, I will share five insights about imposter syndrome and how you can harness your skills and experiences to excel in your career.

Understanding Imposter Syndrome

If you read my recent article, published here a week ago, you will be starting to understand that Imposter syndrome is marked by persistent self-doubt and fear of being exposed as a "fraud." This phenomenon can be especially prevalent among high-achieving women, like you, like me, who may feel pressure to continually prove themselves in workplace environments often dominated by men. A recent study found that about 70% of people experience imposter feelings at some point in their lives, highlighting that these feelings are far from uncommon. Acknowledging that many successful individuals share these thoughts can transform our approach and help us overcome them.

Did you know? Celebrities have also experienced imposter syndrome. Michelle O'Bama, Lady Gaga and more have acknowledged their experience - and, they took action.

The Value of Empathy

One of the most significant strengths women bring to the workplace is empathy. This ability helps us connect with colleagues and clients on a more profound level. For instance, a study published in the "Journal of Business and Psychology" found that teams that demonstrate a high degree of empathy are 25% more productive and report higher job satisfaction. By embracing our empathetic nature, we not only enhance our leadership capabilities but also promote a more inclusive and collaborative working environment. This increased understanding ultimately leads to better outcomes for everyone involved. If, like me, you were ever led to believe that there is no place for emotions in work, think again and consider where that belief system came from...

Skills from Outside of Work

Women in their 30s and those over 40 often possess a wealth of experiences beyond their professional lives, which can significantly enrich their skill sets. Activities such as raising children, volunteering, or pursuing hobbies can provide valuable insights and perspectives. For example, a mother managing a household budget can develop exceptional business, organisational and problem-solving skills that are directly applicable in the workplace. By acknowledging these experiences and their relevance, take a moment to witness how this can boost your confidence and counter feelings of inadequacy. Remember, a diverse background can equip you with unique approaches to challenges that others may not offer.

Embracing a Growth Mindset

Adopting a growth mindset is essential for combating imposter syndrome. This approach encourages us to see challenges as opportunities rather than threats. According to research from Stanford psychologist Carol Dweck, individuals with a growth mindset are more likely to achieve success and experience higher levels of motivation. By focusing on continuous learning, you can build resilience and shift your view toward celebrating achievements and self-improvement. My own journey to the presence and confidence I have today, came from actively pursuing the best version of myself through coaching, mentoring, self-learning, research, avid reading, processing as well as authentically building my tribe even when I did not feel 100% confident.

Building a Support Network

A strong support network is vital for women navigating their careers but not just your family or friends - connecting with others who share similar experiences can offer encouragement and validation.

Whether through mentorship, networking groups, coaching, or industry friendships, building these relationships can help combat feelings of isolation and self-doubt. Sharing your experiences in a safe space fosters empowerment and reminds you that you are not alone in your journey.

Moving Forward With Confidence

Imposter syndrome may be a common challenge for women over 30 and beyond this, but it doesn’t have to define any of us. By recognising unique strengths, embracing empathy, and fostering a growth mindset, you can also navigate your career and prospective leadership with confidence.

Let’s celebrate the value we bring to the workplace and support one another in our paths forward. Together, we can overcome self-doubt and thrive in our professional lives, demonstrating that our rich experiences and diverse skill sets are invaluable assets in any field.
