Imposter syndrome is more than just a phrase; it’s an emotional struggle many women face, especially in demanding careers. Take my client, for instance. She came to me feeling stuck, despite her numerous achievements. She had consistently brought in new clients and surpassed her sales targets. Yet, she couldn’t shake the feeling that she was an imposter, fearing exposure as someone who didn’t truly belong. Sadly, this is a common experience for many women, especially in male-dominated industries like law, finance, and technology.
Understanding Imposter Syndrome
Imposter syndrome often feels like an internal critic that just won’t quiet down. For my client, it was a relentless voice echoing that her success was due to luck rather than talent. This disconnect can be damaging. Statistics show that roughly 70% of people experience imposter syndrome at some point in their lives. This includes women and those in professions where the competition is (or is perceived as) fierce. This internal battle can stand in the way of recognising your worth and pursuing opportunities confidently. In fact, I recall, holding back, over-thinking what I could put myself forward for in my first job.
Women are often more inclined to voice these emotions, but many feel isolated after years of suffering in silence. A report from the American Psychological Association found that women are more likely to internalise stress, especially in high-pressure roles. The constant pressure to perform not only amplifies these feelings but also creates anxiety about being "found out."

The Challenges of Mid-Level Female Associates
The life of a mid-level female associate is often a balancing act. You find yourself in a challenging position - too senior to ask for help, yet not established enough to feel secure. According to a 2022 survey by the National Center for Women & Information Technology, nearly 50% of women in tech feel inadequate about their skills compared to their male peers. This pressure can lead to burnout and high stress. My experience coaching lawyers, leaders and other female executives undercovers imposter syndrome in at least 80% of them. For me, this is not negative as it demonstrates a willingness to "go there."

The Importance of Self-Care
Self-care is not just a trendy hashtag; it's a crucial practice for mental and emotional health. I advise my clients to view self-care as an essential part of their success strategy, to add it into their diaries. Just like meeting a client deadline, setting aside time for personal wellbeing should be non-negotiable.
Incorporating small self-care practices daily can yield significant benefits. For instance, taking just 15 minutes a day to reset your mind through meditation or a walk can profoundly impact your overall wellbeing. Research has shown that taking regular breaks can actually boost productivity by 15 to 30%.
When you prioritise your own needs, it shifts your mindset from self-doubt to empowerment. This shift creates a resilient foundation to step outside your comfort zone and chase your true goals. You can bloom as a fresh "you" surfaces.

Embracing Your True Self
Overcoming imposter syndrome is less about erasing self-doubt and more about embracing who you are. Understand that you are not alone as many women who reach professional heights have fought similar battles. For example, Michelle Obama has spoken openly about her own impostor feelings, despite being one of the world’s most recognised figures.
Coaching can be an effective way to navigate these feelings. It offers a safe space where you can openly discuss your fears and thoughts. Through guided conversations, you can start reframing negative beliefs into positive affirmations. The transformation can help you embrace your true self, pursue your career with confidence, and inspire those around you. In my coaching practice, we often also embody mindfulness - bespokely designed for you.
Ultimately, overcoming imposter syndrome is about reclaiming your narrative. By stressing the importance of self-care, pursuing support, and recognising your capabilities, you can break free from self-doubt. Remember, this journey is yours. Embrace it, and know that true potential lies within you.
